Georgia Cambrian Bug Hunt

Today I spent a couple hours along the Conasauga River in Murray County, Georgia collecting trilobites at an exposure that I believe is Upper Cambrian. The trilobites are found in tan to olive colored mudstone. The trilobites are quite abundant at this location and I believe the ones I collected are all Aphelaspis brachyphasis. Below are some of my finds and a pic of the collecting area.

Wow!

Nice trilobites!

Looks like you did fairly well.

Did you have to split allot of shale to get those, or were they exposed, or did you find them by searching the already split shale?

Looks like a nice place to fossil hunt.  Not a huge trilo guy but those are really cool looking

There were none exposed (opened) and the majority came from me splitting the leftovers from other collectors. Lastly, this was just a couple of what I found- there were many, many more.

Same here, I am in Georgia for a couple days and thought I would stop. It is really a nice change from Mazon Creek fossils, where you go home with closed concretions which most likely contain nothing. At least here, I knew I had something.

If you look at your pieces with a binocular microscope, you may be lucky and find an agnostid trilobite as well.  They are much less common than the Aphelaspis, they are much smaller, and rarely are complete, but they are very interesting.

Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!

Haha!  I hear ya with Mazon collecting!  But those are cool looking trilobites.  The colors are cool with them too and some nice details.  And no freeze/thawing with those things!

Really nice trilos! The matrix is a lot different from what you find here in New York. I like the colors.
