MCG DAWG Posted May 23, 2017 Share Posted May 23, 2017 Going to Hilton Head Island for vactation in July. Haven't been there since I discovered this shark tooth/fossil addiction several years ago. I'll likely charter a boat to take me out to shark tooth island in the savannah river but would love any advice on any good spots on the island itself if anyone has them. MCG DAWG Posted May 24, 2017 Author Share Posted May 24, 2017 A poster on a FB fossil page l posted on lives on HHI. He noted it's all but barren. Terrible hunting. As you just stated the beaches on the Island are basically void of fossils. The closest areas would be around north towards Beaufort or south to Savannah as far as I know. There are also many great S.C. sites in a few hours drive. fossilselachian Posted May 24, 2017 Share Posted May 24, 2017 I spend a lot of time on HHI and was present during the beach renourishment project. As another previously posted, the beaches are barren with regard to shark teeth. Over the past decades on the island it was always possible to find teeth. You needed some patience but teeth could always be found. During the recent four month visit, I gave up looking after the first week or so. Edisto used to be where all the teeth were but the beach replenishment they just finished covered most of those up. There's still a few if you walk far enough past the state park. Brett Breakin' Rocks Posted May 26, 2017 Share Posted May 26, 2017 Port Royal isn't too far ... at The Sands the beach search area could be considered small but if the sand has been pushed around enough and the tide is low you can always come away occasionally with some cool stuff. The beach is all dredge and has plenty of huge chunks .. phosphate nodules. The majority of the teeth are small so don't blink but the Hemi teeth if you find them have always run larger.
