Need ID for Texas Bivalve

Recommended Posts

This bivalve is 10mm long and from the Lower Cretaceous of Cooke County Texas. It's probably from the Duck Creek Formation but may be from the Ft. Worth Formation. It may even be the Goodland. I'm sure I've seen them other places but I just now brought one home and need to give it a proper label. These formations would be of Albian Stage or Washita Group in Texas. It looks a little like some Ostrea sp. I've seen in some references but not exactly the same. Any help would be great.

Check out a Plicatula sp possibly Plicatula dentonensis, a small oyster with pronounced ribs that occurs in the Duck Creek Fm. See Finsley's "Field Guide To Fossils of Texas".

What other fossils are associated with this one?

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.

See my Arizona Paleontology Guide    link  The best single resource for Arizona paleontology anywhere.

Sadly Ignacio was engaged so I'll just do you a compensatory injustice when you're least expecting it ;)

Weird how often I forget to consult the best source of ID we have for Texas! In this case it's more like this bivalve being associated with another find. This is the only thing I've seen so far with the brittle star assemblages. The layer is at the top of the Duck Creek limestone/marl combinations and also it's harder than the limestone below it and with finer bedding planes. I'm trying to tell if it could be Ft. Worth Formation because I'm also seeing some aphanitic-sized specks in some of it. Now I just need to see if collectors find the P. dentonensis in those layers.

I agree that this is probably a species of Plicatula, a.k.a. kittens paw oysters. It looks very, very similar to an Oligocene species we find here in N.C., P. densata.

Before you fall on your sword, how do you know he didn't edit his entry after you called him on it just to make you look bad?
