is this an egg?

hi im new to the forum. i found this rock and as i picked it up part of it broke and there are crystals on the smaller piece. ive read fossils tend to have crystals sometimes. just wondering if this is just a rock or an egg. any help would be great. thanks!

Welcome to the forum. :) 

 

I think you have either a geode or a nodule, but sadly not a fossil. You are correct that some fossils will present crystals as part of the fossilization/mineralization process. When it comes to egg fossils, there are ways to tell by texture and shape (and they do not always resemble eggs as we know them!).

I agree with Kane, ... either a nodule or concretion

No thin eggshell - but rather a thick rind -  the concentric layers are typical of concretions.

I agree. It's a pseudofossil. Nice examples from Indiana are presented here .

Yeah I have found tons of these things in Devonian deposits here in Maryland.

i actually am in southern indiana and my neighbor has a big rock pile with fossils and geodes and they told me to take them all. i have what appears to be a large clam but maybe its a rock too. ill post some of my finds. i offered to pay for them and they said no! i might have to buy them dinner or something. thanks so much for responding! heres the possible clam. its 28 inches in diameter
