@paxhunter I sure hope you didn't find that all in one day!  Well you put me to shame. I've only managed to recover half of a meg but I have found some massive hemis. Was there yesterday and recovered a lot. You did really well and that thresher looks very impressive. I don't recall ever seeing one from the bay this large. Congratulations on your finds. High tides are here but that won't deter! I'm going out every weekend or at least every other! The $18 to get into Bayfront seems a bit steep but I'm still going in!

No that is from april and may and the megs are out there just time and luck I normally try to hit the beach twice a week but life has slowed me up the past few weeks and i was Stoked about the thresher. I normally walk further south of brownies i only go venture up there a few times a year but if u have a calvert library card i do know you can get free passes as long as you plan in advance abd reserve your free pass hopefully i will bump into you on one of my trips up that way

I am super jealous of the giant thresher! That is a sweet find! :envy:

That's what I was thinking to! Thresher's that size are rarer than complete Meg's IMHO. Wow!

I've been there once or twice. Incredible feeling and a truly incredible find. I just recovered a Brambel tooth. Those are very rare.

Here's a map to best explain where I was. I think I breezed too quickly past those first shallow beaches, thinking that there might be more as I paddled south, but it was a lot of that artificial rock coastline and then those private beaches. I stopped a couple of times- far away from where some children were playing on the beach- but didn't find anything. Is it a bad sign if you don't even see any signs of the bivalve shells that come out of the cliffs? By the time I was heading back, the tide was coming in.

Those are some prime spots you paddled by and it is normal for there to not be large beaches thats why when you hunt on the bay the tides are the biggest factor

That Alopias grandis tooth in your 1st photo is freaking SWEET!!!! Did you see any remnants of serrations on the front or the back of the tooth? I couldn't tell from the photo.

A. grandis teeth are quite rare and serrated or partially serrated ones are even more rare.

It is the first and only giant thresher i have ever found and i have looked at it fairly closely although not under a microscope or magnifying glass and do not see any serrations

An A. grandis with no serrations is still an A. grandis and a VERY nice addition to any collection.

I personally know a guy who has "actively" hunted / collected the Chesapeake Bay and it's tributaries for 40+ years. He has 6 A. grandis teeth but NONE have serrations.

I started out around 11:30am, and low tide was at 1:39pm. Next time I'll spend more time on those small beaches! There really wasn't any point in going further south past the rock coastline. Thanks for the advice! I may return next week. Seeing the photos of your finds only encourages me.
