Can you please help ID?

Is this a bee, ant, or something else? Was found in Florrissant Fossil Quarry back in 2011 by my oldest grandchild. I added this to my small collection for safe keeping. If you could ID it, I would be most appreciative and my grandchild would be excited. Thanks.

Hi,

It looks like some type of wasp, a quick google of the insect taxa at the locality comes up with species like Paleovespa florissantia which looks superficially like your specimen, although perhaps a closer up image (if possible) would help give a better ID. However, I'm sure there are members here who are miles more knowledgeable about the locality etc. than me so I may be wrong.

I think you are right TXV24, I didn't think to google Colorado insect fossils. Ha. Plus, I thought it was a bee and not a wasp. Thanks.

Can we get a close-in photo that shows more of the fossil and less extraneous rock?  Raggedy Man's excellent fossil notwithstanding, I cannot see enough detail in the original photo to be sure of any ID even to order.  In particular I would like to see the venation of the wings if that is preserved.

Unfortunately that is as close as i can get with my camera, I don't have a mico lens. Photoshop didn't really help either.
