At one time there were active coal mines on Lookout Mountain near Durham, in the northwestern corner of Georgia.  Some nice plant fossils can still be found in the old mine dumps. Unfortunately they are on private property, but if you join the Georgia Mineral Society, they have a fossil section and do a trip to the mine dumps about annually.
