Mastodon Development--learned Something New

Is it just me, or does this jaw section have 4 tooth sockets? One unerupted (tooth is still in there), one tooth unworn, one tooth worn, and one empty socket up front. Weird. So does this mean that after a mastodon shed a tooth, the bone continued to grow forward while specialized cells removed the bone from the front of the jaw and new bone grew at the back of the jaw? I mean, it makes sense, it's just strange to see it. At any given moment, a mastodon typically had 8 functional teeth, whereas a mammoth had 4, right?

Unfortunately, the two erupted teeth are missing pretty big chunks. <_< The unerupted tooth is all there, though.

"At any given moment" I'd love to find one of those. It looks like you just unwrapped a present... ;)

I wish it was that easy. This guy arrived like a puzzle and had been drying out for the last 20 years. Still not done with the rebuild...
