Possibly a shell fossil?

I found this yesterday at runswick bay in Yorkshire. It's very hard.

 

 

Could anyone tell me what type of creature this is, or is it just a funny shaped pebble?

This is a fossil of a gryphaeid oyster, likely Gryphea or a closely related form.  These are commonly called "devil's toenails".

I agree. Gryphaea with the valves still attached.

Indeed a nice Gryphaea, species probably Gryphaea dilatata
