Fossils can be found in rivers, but are usually worn (badly). Most fossilized life is in rock or has became rock. But they can be / are still fragile. Without being more specific about the location than "beach, california" it is not possible to determine an age of the fossil. Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys."
