I tried out a new secluded north Texas creek while artifact hunting with a friend. He told me the creek didn't have fossils but I managed to prove him wrong and find a really cool piece of Protostega plastron, a small Mosasaur vert and a section of ammonite :). Wild hogs were everywhere there.

Your "ammonite" is actually a rudist clam probably, Durania austensis, that is found in the Cretaceous Austin Group. Where did you find yours?  What rock formation? The cellular/porous texture visible along with the rib-like features in your hand-help fossil are typical for the species. See  my pictures of one found in Plano, Texas.

  • I found this Informative 2

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.

Thanks. I had originally labeled it as rudists and then changed it. I think Austin group is correct for the area.

Good stuff.  I work at a nature preserve where we are just starting to get the feral hogs under control...we hope.

Lol thanks. Lately my eyes have been focused on artifacts while still picking up some nice fossils.
