DPS Ammonite

Consider searching the geological literature on the internet. I found a USGS publication titled:" Geology of the Santa Ana Mountains" that looks very interesting.  https://books.google.com/books?id=mEZSAQAAMAAJ&pg=SL4-PA15&lpg=SL4-PA15&dq=holtz+shale+fossils&source=bl&ots=NS8N8yJPKF&sig=pDzHt4eeqW9KWIgJ30fpI-Vxb6w&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiVh_vo1unUAhXKz1QKHcB5Ch8Q6AEIPDAD#v=onepage&q=holtz shale fossils&f=false

Look for geological maps for the area too.

The Holtz shale (and other units) have fossils. Search TFF for "Silverado Canyon" and "Holtz shale fossils"; I found some hits.

Searching the literature is fun and rewarding and should be done before searching the the actual fossil sites.

Good luck and happy searching,

John

Thank you! I agree, research before heading out is a must! Also knowing the directions and not relying 100% on the GPS is a good idea too.

Just wanted to ask, is the only way to access Silverado Canyon through the toll road?
