Back in the Callovian woods

I set off this morning on my first excursion since my return from Canada. Now that I'm settled back in at home again, I was starting to twiddle my thumbs, so I figured it was about time to get back to the Callovian hillside sites in the woods of the Wutach Valley area. Rain was being forecast, but that didn't deter me. Just threw my raincoat, rubber overalls and boots into the car along with my equipment and off I went. I decided to check out a spot I'd already worked several times with varying results. This time it really payed off, since I managed to find a section in a familiar horizon which started giving up some well-preserved ammonites. It's often the case that they just come out in bits or are not in very good condition, but this time I hit paydirt. The best one, although there are quite a few nice ones, is a Macrocephalites with a diameter of 20cm. which should prep out quite nicely. This really was my lucky day. It didn't even rain! As usual I didn't think to take along my camera , which would have made for some nice in situ shots, but at least I've made a couple of pics of the finds in the raw. I'll be starting the prep work tomorrow, so I'll be posting them one after the other here as they're done.

Sleep isn't necessary! Very nice finds. I really wish I could go out to dig for these but am bound to my shark teeth. Looking forward to seeing the prep work.

Ok, lady and gentlemen. Here is #1. Of course I chose to begin with the big Macrocephalites. There wasn't all that much matrix to remove with the stylus, but nevertheless it took 4 hour's worth of abrading to get it finished. It's a calcitized steinkern of the complete phragmocone of what would have been quite a large one, with some very nice sutures. First a couple of "before" photos and then the end result from various perspectives.

Congratulations, Roger. Nice haul there. Glad to see you're getting back in the swing of things. Your prep work on that Microcephalites is truly awesome- turning that rough hunk of rock into a thing of sheer beauty. Amazing!!!!

...just a fantastic job on this ammonite, Roger! :fistbump:  This is absolutely one of my favorites (of your finds :P).

I use a beeswax finish. Either a product called Rember or Kladol.

I figured you'd like it. That last one of yours is also my favorite.

I finished off 2 "multiblocks" today. This one looked interesting since I figured it would produce a "piggy back". Here's the front and back beforehand.

5965320ca5861_A1292fvorher1.thumb.jpg.86e137b49f97e9bebe037d06d1320aef.jpg

And here's the finished product. A Macrocephalites cf. jacquoti backed up by a Choffatia sp.

A1292e.thumb.jpg.2c5915e9ad6a57500478b355466ce556.jpg

The next one looked like a bit of a challenge, since it involved some transfer work. There are 3 ammonites there. One is easy to see, the second at the top is hardly visible and the third is in the smaller piece.

Two of the ammonites broke into pieces during the early stylus phase, but I decided to glue them back together. No sense in giving up at that point.

It turned out to be worth it in the end. I suppose I could still fill in the cracks with stonemeal, but I thnk it actually looks alright as is. A Macrocephalites sp. in the middle flanked by a Homeoplanulites sp. on the right and a Choffatia sp. on the left.
