On the beach

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Found this on the beach here in Shishmaref, Alaska. I have doubts that it is terribly old, but then again, there are fossils found here quite often. It's just that the location...seems like someone would have picked it up by now. I found it right at the head of one of the main beach access trails. It is heavier than I would expect of regular bone of this size, though, and it is very hard. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

Looks like a piece of fossilized bone with a terminus on one end. Could be cetacean. @Boesse would probably know for sure.

In some places, because of the nature of the erosion happening, there can be a small window of opportunity when pieces are exposed. The day before it may not have been visible at all.

That is a land mammal tibia, some kind of artiodactyl or perissodactyl.
