Gemworld 2017 Cretodus score!

Darktooth

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! So it has been a busy week for me, as I have things to post but haven't found the time. I just got back from Gemworld 2017 and I would like you opinion on my one and only purchase. I went to the show with the mindset that if I bought anything at all it had to be something special. I normally do not buy fossils. So after walking around and looking at many interesting specimens, what caught my eye was a  Cretodus crassidens tooth from South Dakota in matrix. I have wanted one of these for awhile. The tooth is pretty nice. It is all intact. But there are two cracks which run though the tip of the root above one of the cusps. As an added bonus there is a smaller Cretodus as well as a few Squalicorax falcatus teeth on the top and bottom of the piece. There also appears to be possible bone and fish teeth. I paid $97.  I know that Cretodus teeth are sought after and can demand a fairly high price. Because  don't normally buy, I would just like to know if you guys think it was a good purchase. I don't know if I would have paid that much for the Cretodus by itself , but with all the other teeth in the matrix It was hard to pass up. Here are some pics. I can try to take some close-ups later if anyone wants.

Thanks Dave

@ynot Thanks Tony! And by the way the Cretodus measures 2 1/8 inches.

looks like a great piece.

I think that sounds reasonable, I don't collect many shark teeth, but if it is a sough after piece by itself without all the other teetheses I think it sounds good!

I dont know Cretodus from a hole in the ground, but you sure do have a rock that is LOADED with sharks teeth!!!

I'd probably only pay up to $50 but this is a really nice tooth. Excellent addition to your collection.

@Foozil@Fossil-Hound Thanks for the comments. Like I said earlier, I normally don't buy any fossils. But I felt like this was a rare opportunity. Plus I recently got a bonus from work, so I figured just this once.

Very nice!!! I think it is a lovely purchase because the matrix piece allows you to showcase a fossil you enjoy in a wider context! :)

I would say you got a pretty good deal. A 2+ inch tooth is huge for a Cretaceous shark. The additional teeth in the matrix makes for a very esthetic display piece.

I have thousands of shark teeth from the Cretaceous and only a handful bigger than 2 inches. I think that is a fair price and the matrix is really cool.

"so I figured just this once..." isn't that how most people get hooked on addictive substances that I shall not name?

Yeah the matrix is pretty nice. It appears to be a type of sandstone with the grains bigger than what I am used to seeing. It is not crumbly either. It is actually quite solid, and heavier than it looks.

Dave, I look at purchases like this. If you got something you wanted and were OK with the price' then it is a good deal.

Yes I really wanted this and I was ok with the price for this specimen, only because I had researched what other Cretodus were going for a couple months ago. I just wanted others opinions to make sure I made a worthwhile purchase. When I first got into minerals and fossils I made a lot of mistakes buying and selling stuff. I want to make sure I don't repeat those mistakes.

I second this. Plus, it's a really nice looking piece!
