Ptpowers
I found one this week on a beach in southern California. Any ideas on where it came from? It is very close in size and shape to human lumbar vertebrae.

To get the best chance of a good discussion and ID of your fossil, It is best to start an ID topic of your own for a specific find. I can see why you put it here though as this is a thread about vertebrae. Putting it in its own thread with key words (tags) also helps the forum to be a searchable resource. Can we see some more pictures of your find? Different views would be great. Thanks!
Kane
Welcome to the forum. More pictures might be helpful. A few at different angles, and a close up of the specimen on a flat surface should do. It looks modern rather than a fossil, but this is judging simply on one image. I've created a separate topic for your request for ID. ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
PFOOLEY
Perhaps something like a posterior thoracic vertebrae from a seal or sea lion? Ptpowers
Does anyone know what animal this is from? It's about the size of a human lumbar vertebra. I found it last week near Long Beach, CA. Here's another angle
M Harvey
I'm calling it a sea lion vertebra. Recent and not fossilized.
maty9999
I'm not sure as to exactly what it is but I feel it's not human. The centrum as well as the articular surfaces don't seem to have the right shape for that.
