3 Recent Ecphora Finds

Hello everyone. I thought I would share a few pics of three recently found Ecphora quadricostata. I found these back in June on the Tar River in Edgecomb, County North Carolina. They are from The Pliocene Yorktown Formation, Rushmere Member. What makes one of these so special (the largest one too) is that it has a complete spire. Ecphora are very rarely found with complete spires. This one was dug directly out of the formation out just below the water line.

The three are also different sizes from very small to a rather large specimen.

wow, they look so much like ammonites in their front view... its amazing how many shapes shelled mollusks can go in.

If you're a fossil nut from Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Redondo Beach, or Torrance, feel free to shoot me a PM!

I've never really thought about or noticed that, but yes they do look like ammonites from that view.

Very nice Ecphora. You obviously had a great day. The Rushmere Member of the Yorktown Formation is incredibly full of Ecphora. Finding one nice Ecphora on a fossil hunt is great, finding multiples is simply wonderful. It is so satisfying when you find a nice Ecphora but its even more satisfying when you get the nice one home, clean it up and it's still a "nice one." We've had many occasions when all that didn't work out so well for us or the Ecphora......... Of course, then there's the really nice one the new German Shepard puppy "crunched."

Don, Theresa says send any Ecphora you don't want her way. She promises not to let the dog get it/them. :hearty-laugh:

@Fossil-Hound

Planes fly into BWI, RIC. ORF or RDU every day. Perhaps late winter or early spring we can coordinate a long weekend for you somewhere in NE NC or SE VA.

I'm still very much looking forward to the first time and I get to hunt / collect with Don. We've tried quite a few times but water levels keep spoiling our plans. One day..........

  • 1 year later...

It's always a beautiful thing finding these. My favorite fossil to search for here in the Calvert cliffs exposure.
