Quaternary Alluvial deposits, what to expect ?

Hi folks,

  My area in eastern WV is primarily devonian but the map shows some areas along the river as quaternary.

The next time I go there, I plan to investigate some of the high banks, small cliffs and generally keep an eye peeled for anything out of the ordinary.

What, if anything could I expect to find in this area ?

 

Just wondering what features to focus on and what might be there ....... if anything.

You will probably not find any fossils other than stream tumbled gravels that may contain fossil bearing rock.

I once asked the same thing, it's normally just clay and dirt with rocks eroded from the surrounding things, so worn Devonian rocks probably in your case (in my case a whole lotta schist) sometime rarely, subfossils and things are found (rarely ice age stuff!) although this is unlikely. I have found rhizoliths in them.

Thought (hoped) I might expect to see something in the vertical clay banks and such.

It is possible but not likely. Keep an eye out.
