Toof Monster
I have no idea. Found in North Charleston, SC in a recently dug pond. Any ideas?
Ludwigia
Could it be part of a large ray plate? 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/

ynot
Looks like an odd concretion to Me. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." Darren Garrison
Could it be a tooth fragment from a young mammoth? (Totally non-expert guess.)

Sagebrush Steve
Banded chert?
fifbrindacier
It more likely is a banded chert or a concretion. 1 "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." Toof Monster
It's not a banded chert. It is definitely bone of some sort. It was found in a layer with a lot of marine fossils.
ynot
I agree that it is not a banded chert, the texture is wrong for that. I do not agree that it is bone, again the texture is not right. It does have the texture that I would expect to see in a concretion. And being found in a layer where fossils are found does not exclude concretions as the two are often found together. The only other thing I can think of, that would look like this, is a piece of layered siltstone. 2 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." Plantguy
Sticky with the marine theme...Could it be a really beat up partial fish mouth part like Diodon has? I've got some pretty good sized ones and they have a similar banding. Regards, Chris

Plantguy
My unpaid imaginary assistant is in the garage looking for examples right now. He's doing a lot of grumbling and mumbling and doesnt seem to understand the organization scheme or lack there of....Let me see if we can find something to rule this wild idea in as a possibility or rule it out...hes been asked for clear pictures--...LOL. Plantguy
Ok, here's some photos. I can't decide but am leaning to nixing my fish mouth part possibility . Your specimen is quite worn and compared to the fish part examples I have it appears to have a different type of relief but similar alternating bands. While looking at some fish mouth part examples I noticed several turtle shell pieces and made a comparison--they do look similar too but I'm not convinced. First shot shows the common views of these mouth parts and the 2nd shot shows what the sides/cross section patterns look like. Lastly, the third shot is a turtle shell remnant that has some similarity as well. Need Eric or some of the others who are more familiar marine scraps or can research this further to nail this one down for you. Regards, Chris . sixgill pete
@Toof Monster Can you take good in focus pictures of the sides (to see if there is bone texture) the bottom and again of the top. Please make sure the item is the center of attention in the picture. Preferably not in your hand. Also give up good dimensions; width, length (depth) and thickness. This item intrigues me, but I am not ready (or able) to make a guess on the ID at this time. Sharks of SC
I agree with phosphate nodule, I see a lot of these in the marine sites locally. Nice finds, by the way!
