Hello!

I'm so happy to find this great forum. It's always nice to find a new site full of good people and great information.

I have enjoyed spending time in nature for as long as I can remember. Walking along rivers looking for animals, fossils or arrowheads is one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon. I was out today and came across this tooth. It struck me as being out of the ordinary. Looking through dozens of images on the internet it resembles cow, deer or taipur.

This was found at the edge of a small river right at the shoreline. The river is in Illinois about 20 miles West of Chicago.

Any help is greatly appreciated and thank you for allowing me to join and post here. Please let me know if you want more photos, further description of the item or where it was found.

Thank you!

Welcome to TFF!

I think it is bovide. Buffalo or cow.

Thank you!

Thank you also for the suggestion about what it is. It seems from the pictures I've seen that seems right. Thank you.

I look forward to nailing it down and also finding some more interesting pieces.

Although the root of the tooth looks bovine from pictures I've seen. It seems to have the oval separate oval stylid. I am leaning to thinking this is bison.

Hi and welcome from Hong Kong!

I think a better quality picture of the chewing end (ie. the non pointy end ) would aid in identification.

  • I found this Informative 1

Keep looking! They're everywhere!

I just noticed that picture wasn't very clear. Here is another one: 5999cb79d2b48_1IMG_0377.thumb.jpg.4944899cd3a0b53f909bd89d7fff5b16.jpg

I agree with bovid -- cow or bison, probably cow.

Thank you for your evaluation!
