Ammonite for lunch

PFOOLEY

Recommended Posts

After visiting my crew out in Placitas (short drive from ABQ), I decided to stop at a BLM open space at the roadside. There is a supposed Upper Cretaceous section exposed here and I figured I would eat my lunch and go for a short walk. If there was an K section, it did not look the part...

placitas1.thumb.jpg.d7cc82549ca80bc671ba31156bd54902.jpg

...the surface of the slopes are covered with Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian) rocks. I mosied along the trail, munching on a granola bar when I spotted some concretions and shale up a gully...

...and upon further inspection, an ammonite! :ammonite01:

I quickly marched my coiled companion to the truck...back to work! :D There is definitely some Upper Cretaceous rocks here and well worth a return trip.

Planned or impromptu...happy hunting!

You have to love the yellow color of many cretaceous rocks!  I expect oysters and ammonites to be leaping out of the rocks.

Nice Ammo, better than the rock I pick up at lunch (schist)!

That's a skookum ammonite, I can't wait to see it prepped either! Any idea yet what part of the Upper Cret.?

What does the Penn stuff look like?

What is that, 220 million years in a few steps?

Congratulations Mike. Great find! Nice to know there is easily accessible Upper Cretaceous rock and fossils not far from you. Definitely worth exploring further. Love to see that fat boy prepped.

Looks like an amazing place Mike. I love living my ammonite fantasies through your posts, being they are so rare here in N.C. and we hare limited to a very small handful of species.

  • 1 month later...

Thank you all for the comments! :)

I ended up making one last trip to this beautiful little spot to take a closer look at the geology.

I was able to locate the Juana Lopez member...

...and some specimens of the Late Middle Turonian oyster, Lopha lugubris.

Further down in the section was the Semilla Sandstone.

After some conversations with Spencer Lucas, all the specimens I found will be added to the NMMNH collections and the section will be measured. :)
