Basilosaurus Tooth?

Any opinions on this tooth? Found in Yazoo County, Mississippi. It was found in a small creek approximately 1/2 mile into the hills from the delta. It measures 2 & 3/4" in length.

Adam,

You should search this forum for similar canines,

I would think Dire Wolf would also be a candidate.

Waiting for the experts to chime in..

Terrestrial carnivore - cf. canidae - is what I said in private messages regarding this find.

Harry,

In late November, a friend  found a canine in Peace River and asked me for an ID.  I told him Dire Wolf probably based on the lingual carina. He just came back and said other fossil "experts" think it is bear. Unfortunately all I have is river photos, no exact measurement. Which large Peace River fossil canines might have a carina? Can you comment?

I can't say for sure from these images, but I'd tend toward bear.  A lateral view might show a bear-like inflation of the tooth root.

Thanks, I can get a hold of the tooth given a couple of days:
