I agree it looks man-made, but others may have other opinions. Let's see. It looks a little like a piece of melted rubber tire to me. I'm curious to see what others think. I love beach combing. The northern section of the outer banks is not known for being fossiliferous, that is not saying that there are not fossils found on occasion though. It does not resemble any type of fossil I have ever seen from N.C., but of course I have certainly not seen them all. Don't get too worried, it's really pretty easy. The second method (the one where you just suspend the specimen in a vial of water) is probably the easiest way to do it.
