fifbrindacier
Hi everybody, last week i found some corals and i need your help to try to identify them because i'm no expert at all. For those who can't visualize the tags like me, it is the cenomanian from south-west of France. Thanks in advance. 1) "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." fifbrindacier
It's mineral, because it's very hard. "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." abyssunder
Are you sure that those greenish parts are not green algae(or similar) covering yellowish calcite after aragonite in the replacement process? Nice finds, BTW. " We are not separate and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way. fifbrindacier
I tried to scratch them off but they didn't move, i i'll try with my engraver. fifbrindacier
Ok, so i'll let them. I don't know very much about mineralization. Coco
H Are you able to do a very well close-up on these minerals to permit us to identify them ? abyssunder
Chip off an isolated little grain and take it in 9 degrees vinegar. If it fizzes it's calcite. fifbrindacier
It doesn't fizz. "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." HansTheLoser
Poorly preserved. Probably Astraeofungia or Dimorphastrea. Some specimen seems to be moulds.
Coco
Hi, I can't distinguish the crystalline shape. What do you see ? Cube ? Rhomboedre ? Other shape ? Other shape ? Coco I took more pics with a magnifier, i hope they'll be clear enough. I see little grains and to me it looks rhomboide. Maybe it is aragonite as suggested @abyssunder. I looked on that site : http://www.corallosphere.org/taxon/478 and i think that the first item is a good candidate for Dimorphastrea. abyssunder
I suggested calcite, not aragonite. picture from here " We are not separate and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way. fifbrindacier
Sorry, you're right. I put the little bit in a 14 % vinegar and it didn't fizz. abyssunder
Then maybe they are Beekite . abyssunder
Not the same color, I agree, but I'm wondering what might be the origin of the greenish color in the following samples (?): picture from here picture from here Are the green colors produced by organisms using sunlight to produce chlorophyll or it is green rust (green iron sulfide)? fifbrindacier
The fossils found on the foreshore in that place have a matrix more greenish than the one on the coast.
