I found this fossil imprint (that's probably not the right terminology) on a rock last month in northern Michigan. It measures 2" x 2", and in places there seems to be a honeycomb pattern. What's with the tubular piece?

I would guess that it is an cross section through a coral. Probably a Rugose coral.

There also seems to be a cross section of a shell below it, as well as the imprint of a spiriferid brachiopod below that.

If the fossil is 2" across, the tubes seem to be well under 1mm which suggests bryozoan, or perhaps chaetetid sponge. A bit narrow for a tabulate.

Estonian: Can you give us a better scale on it ? Perhaps a ruler in the photo.

I don't believe he has me on it this time :)
