Quick trips to the creek

Here's our finds from two trips this month (9/3 & 24). When Mrs. Beachbum and I want to go out for a couple of hours, we head up to Gainesville to our go to creek. It's not very wide, maybe 4' tops, and it's pretty shallow ,a couple of inches. If you want a work out, this is the creek to go to. It has plenty of sand , a few gravel bars, limestone close to the surface and a few spots that are knee deep.

Working a long handle shovel through the sand to get to the gravel in this creek is hit or miss. These last two trips have been a hit for us as you can see. We ended up with some really nice finds. A whale vert, whale tooth ( thanks to macrophyseter and fifbrindacier for the id) , deer tooth ( thanks to harry pristis for the id) , a nice mako, a bunch of hemi's , my best meg to date from this creek,  pieces of ray barbs and more. Who says you can't enjoy the outdoors while tooth hunting.

Great finds! Nothing better than getting out in the creek and finding such high quality fossils!

I am curious, is this Bone Valley Formation? I ask because the meg looks similar to others that I have seen from that formation.

I hope I can have as much luck next month when I travel to Florida!

Gorgeous tooth. Are you sure that's a C. megalodon? Could be a C. chubutensis. Are there cusps on the side?

Thanks Rustdee , I'm sure you'll have a great time and finds when you come to visit Fl. As far as I know , this is not in the Bone Valley Formation.

Thanks Fossil-Hound. I took a closer look at it and there's no cusps on it.

Hi beachbum The megolodon tooth looks like an upper second left anterior of the Otodus megolodon to me, megolodon is now in the Otodus family and it looks like you had a very nice day of collecting with well over a hundred fossils. Can you show a photo of the front side of the tooth if you will. George

That is a pretty meg tooth, and yes meg, not chubutensis. Looks like you had a few good trips. Congrats.

Most likely a C. megalodon then. Congratulations.
