Genuine Meg tooth?

Recommended Posts

thelivingdead531

Hi everyone! I found this megalodon tooth on an auction site, and considering the good quality of it and the very low price, I was hoping if someone more experienced could tell me if they see any red flags on it before I put an offer in. It looks nice to me, but I'm nowhere near qualified to give a sound judgement on something like this. The seller has it listed as being 4 inches high. Also, this and one other (much more expensive) Meg tooth appear to be the only things ever listed from the seller, so I'm very hesitant. Any advice on the tooth in question would be appreciated.

It looks real to my eyes. Root has wear, there is chipping along the blade and most of the serrations are worn off. Not desirable tributes to have if reconstructing a faux tooth.

@caldigger So do you mean that people who are reconstructing Meg teeth wouldn't bother with details like chipping and wear? Sorry if it's a silly question.

I agree with Caldigger. I certainly can't see any repairs. It all looks legit to me as well. Looks like a nice tooth.

@wamorris1999 Thank you for your help! I couldn't see any obvious red flags, but I'm still learning.

@fossilselachian Thanks!  I put in my incredibly low bid and am already winning lol. I am fully committed to put in more if needed, because it was a low bid to start with.

In fact I get very worry is when the tooth is perfect, without any kind of wear in the root or in the tooth... I can not see anyone taking the time to make a fake in such a worn shape. Looking at the pictures I see nothing that makes me think fake. In the case of this tooth, I like the shape and color of the blade, there is no reason to have a high price, I would give a 2 as a quality note. You got a genuine megalodon tooth!

Nice try @JohnBrewer! Unfortunately I was out bid on this tooth so it's not the one that I told you about yesterday. While this one is slightly bigger, I think I like the one that I did win a little more. Once I get it in the mail I'll post a picture of it in the mailbox scores thread.

Sure thing, you just wait patiently for that package to arrive, I'm sure it'll be there any day now.

Megs are so common people rarely fake them. This tooth is low priced due the the  wear, very poor serrations and root issues. For the right price ($50 or less U.S. in my opinion) it is a great buy.
