FAKE TRILOBITE

I picked this up for a few quid in a Spanish market from a Moroccan dealer, who usually sells good stuff, but I'm fairly certain it's a fake, it was too cheap, the colour's not quite right and i would say some of it has been carved and painted. It has a couple of bits of real Cambrian trilobite on the back and seems to have a bit of a Flexicalymene or the like glued on top to provide authenticity.

What do you guys think?20171009_174802.thumb.jpg.4620b57de9f577a7a8eff96defda3b4e.jpg

The pleurae are the wrong shape, and appear to have been carved, as is done on many restored Moroccan Cambrian trilobites.

"Trilobites survived for a total of three hundred million years, almost the whole duration of the Palaeozoic era: who are we johnny-come-latelies to label them as either ‘primitive’ or ‘unsuccessful’? Men have so far survived half a per cent as long."  - Richard Fortey, Trilobite: Eyewitness to Evolution.

Most of it appears to be authentic. The anterior margin, right genal spine and thoracic pleurae have been restored.  The trilobite at the top is not Flexicalymene.

Thanks guys.:trilo:

I only bought it as it is a great example of various trilobite body parts, and much better than a drawing.

You think they're all Hamatolenus, the main one, the underside bit at the top and the little bits on the reverse ?

The others also appear to be ellipsocephalids.  A better photo of the one at the top might help.

The glabella looks a bit strange to me...

I think it's been 'improved' at least.

Another photo is not necessary.  Label it ellipsocephalid indet.
