My mother picked it up on a beach about 30 years ago and thought it was a stone as it is rock hard. It is 7 cms long and 1.5 cms wide I would really appreciate any help. Thank you. Not sure if it was found in Australia or Europe as my Mother travelled and constantly brought home stones etc from beaches all over the world. Brittle Star Posted October 20, 2017 Share Posted October 20, 2017 It maybe be an infill cast of a sponge or a burrow of some sort, without location and age bit difficult. I would go with trace if it is to do with a fossil at all. The texture is consistent with it being a burrow cast. Things like this can match studied specimens from a known site closely enough to be fairly confident of other identifications,such as sponge, or more rarely coprolite, sometimes though.
