Manticocerasman

Recommended Posts

Most of the times when you find a promising specimen there is always that challenge of getting it unscathed out of the matrix.

And often resulting in a lot of cursing and a damaged specimen.

But sometimes, on very .. very … rare occasions you do get that lucky split.

Found this Manticoceras ( goniatite ) last summer. One good hit with the chisel and pop. Only minimal prepwork left.

This one is by far one of my best specimens and made it to my new avatar :D

Manticoceras sp.

Frasnian ( Devonian )

Chimay area ( Belgium )

It's great to see a lucky split even if it's not my own.  I've split shale looking for a variety of things but what usually happens is that the split shows a part of something pretty good or shards of what might have been something good.  When it is pretty good, it usually gets damaged when you try to size the chunk down even after years of practice in avoiding hitting it where the crack will run through the specimen.  Yeah, I've done that even as recently as a couple of weeks ago.  At least it happens less often these days because I've learned when to quit and bring out tools for the finer work.

Nice one!

Given that the sutures are exposed, is there shell material left on the matrix piece?

Yes, the shell is left in the matrix. And only one side of the goniatites in that bank are wel preserved. The fossils are mostly on top of the limestone bank with the side on top often badly preserved. They have been lying around on the seafloor for a while before being completely coverd by sediments.

Yes, ammonites at my local spot are often preserved that way too.

I hope you kept the martix with the shell...

Those suture patterns on that goniatite are a sight to behold. Congratulations on an excellent find.
