The best of my Ammonite collection

Here are a couple I found yesterday.

This is a Mariella. It still needs some cleaning. There were oysters in the grooves of the spirals. I’m still working on removing them and attached matrix.

This may be a Graysonites? It was broken sitting in the marl I pulled it from. I think it is one of the coolest I’ve found.

Look at the tubercals on it! So cool.

I have a Dremmel with engraving and abrasion bits and many other attachments

That’s a rotary tool Kim, easy to slip with that! The type of engraver I meant was one like this 2CD8FA8A-5F03-4117-A41F-1DFADFA159EF.thumb.jpeg.2767ec2f6e6a6e9a68c644d6982f380e.jpeg

which had a sort of pneumatic action. :) need regular breaks tho otherwise you’re get ‘white finger’. Besides it’s best to let it cool down and of course you’ll deserve a cup of tea while you admire your progress. :) next step up is a pen and compressor! I still use both a Dremel and the above as well as my pen.

They are really nice and the Solnhofen fossil beds are amazing for ammonites and starfish . I do prefer ammonites that are in a there matrix. Thanks for showing me @Nimravis

cheers Bobby

I agree, I prefer to leave as much matrix as I can on a fossil (within reason) - it gives some idea of the environment it was preserved in.

Thank you for looking mate and for your kind comments. I will get out there next year and find a couple more. I also placed an ammonite on my Crimbo list but I think with my amazing secret Santa he has :Dalready visited me.

I’m reducing my collection to concentrate on other things. Is there something you’re particularly interested in?

Hi John that is interesting . I have no ammonites in mind but most years I get an ammonite off my wife for Christmas . I have spent a little to much on fossils this month but if I get any Crimbo money I will drop you a line. So are you thinking of specialising in your collecting, if you don’t mind me asking. I can’t make my mind up where fossil collecting is concerned.

I might be able to sort you out with an ammo or two from Morocco. But you'll also have to wait til New Year.

I've also overspent somewhat this month.

Really wow thank you so much. I don’t have any Ammonites from Morocco. We can do a little trade next year just for fun. Cheers Bobby

Nice one! And they don't occur all that often, do they?

Thank you. No they don’t and it is a large and fat specimen. The back it a bit ugly but that is ok with me.
