Nice Fall So Far in VA

Recommended Posts

So, as some of you know Mrs.SA2 took a nasty fall at the end of September resulting in a broken arm and dislocated elbow requiring surgery to repair both. She's on the mend and healing well but has a long way to go. Over the last couple of weekends we've made a few trips to one of our favorite areas to do a little fossil hunting and help her regain her confidence being back outdoors. As usual, we've taken our buddy Trevor (@Daleksec) along on the trips. Mrs.SA2 has done quite well for herself  on these excursions along the river.

Here are a couple of photos of our finds from our 1st trip earlier this month. I found the meg. It's pretty beat up, but "a megs a meg"

I also found the 2 cow shark (notorynchus) teeth.

Here are some from our 2nd trip this month.  We love the hastalis colors.

Photos of our finds from 3 hours hunting this past weekend in the next post.

Cheers,

SA2 / Mrs.SA2

The rest of the finds from this past Saturday.

She found this really kinky vertebrae. Not sure what its from. Doesn't look like the cetacean verts we are used to finding.

Mrs.SA2 just reminded me I forgot to post a photo of the really awesome ray plate she found on our 2nd trip. It is the largest one either of us has ever found. I've still got a little cleaning and prep to do on it. @aerogrower the cubes still have their "magic." :)  :fistbump:

That’s an epic ray plate, Congrats to the Mrs.SA2! The rest are also quite awesome, and a meg is indeed a meg. That’s worlds better than any I’ve ever found (well I haven’t found any:P).

Nice finds.  The vertebra looks like a cetacean cervical vertebra to me.  The fish jaw looks like red drum.

Nice finds and we all know that the Mrs. found the majority of the fossils, including the meg, but I will not say anything :dinothumb:

I saw the vertebra first hand today.  The vertebra isn't cetacean but from a terrestrial mammal.  For a specimen id, even great pictures like in this post aren't anywhere near as good as just holding the specimen in your hand.

Thanks Marco. Obviously, we will be donating it back to "the collection."
