As much as I've looked through books and the internet, I haven't run across any possible places to find ammonites in the midwest.

Any suggestions of locations? I'm in Illinois. My wife's keen to hunt one of these down.

Most of the Midwest is too old. But in the Carboniferous Period (Pennsylvanian and Mississippian) you start to see ammonoids. Those are quite interesting. There is some Cretaceous along the Mississippi River in Tennessee, Kentucky, ??? but I don't think ammonites are common.

I too don't think there are many ammonite locales in the midwest.  But what about cephalopods?  There are road cuts and other sites in IL where cephalopods can be found.

Thanks, we've got cephalopods hither and yon. Had a nice dig up last summer.
