Thanks.  Definitely is a very slow process and if rushed can destroy what your after.

I couldn’t agree more. A top notch preparator is worth their weight in dinosaurs. :D

Some may accuse me of having a slight bias but I would disagree. Ok, maybe a little. I’m not sure why I like preparators so much. They just seem like really nice and intelligent people, especially the kilt wearing variety. :P

Is this the same specimen that ROM pulled out of the Coal Ridge Member of the Judith Formation in Montana?  I thought there was supposed to be quite a bit of soft tissue preservation with this one.

Here's a link to THAT article: Arbour, V.M. and D.C. Evans (2017). A new ankylosaurine dinosaur from the Judith River Formation of Montana, USA, based on an exceptional skeleton with soft tissue preservation. R.Soc. open sci. 4:161086.

BTW...you've got to LOVE the creativity that is being used on dinosaur names these days!  For example:

Zuul crurivastator  (ankylosaurid) from 'Ghostbusters'

'Crichtonsaurus' benxiensis  (ankylosaurid) from the name of the author Michael Crichton who wrote, among other things, 'Jurassic Park' and 'The Lost World'

Dracorex hogwarstia (pachycephalosaurid) from the Harry Potter series

Bambiraptor feinbergi (dromaeosaurid) from the Disney Movie 'Bambi'

I'm sure there are lots of others but I can't think of any right now.  I'm waiting for one named after my favorite movie monster...the inimitable Godzilla!

Preparation work proceeding at a slow pace and here is an example on a block containing  a portion of the  Cervical Half Ring osterderms.

These are the osterderms that protect the neck area

A tank of a creature, you’d think the bone eyelid would be a bit excessive, but if they survived must’ve been important!

Preparation continues on the cervical half ring, day 35. Started uncovering the next osteoderm in block.

That is an understatement!

I am confused, is the skin on zuul? Or is this from a different piece?

Yes its on Zuul but not sure exactly where at this point.  They found soft tissue on the tail but I think the photo is from this block

Dave Evans tweeted that he expects that Zuul will be on a traveling exhibit, at some point.  Good news for us who do not have travel plans to Toronto and the ROM

Shino Sugimoto a preparer on Zuul tweeted this out

We had a busy Friday afternoon. After I smoothed the surface of matrix by removing tool marks, started trimming the  Zuuls tail block jacket with summer tech, Dana. It looks different from a year ago. Our new pneumatic oscillating tools worked really well

Shino Sugimoto: This week, we started to reinforce the original jacket of Dinozuul tail block by adding several layers of Hydrocal FGR 95 gypsum cement with fiberglass. We make jackets not only in the field, but also in the lab.

Shino Sugimoto:  Summer tech and I have worked hard to reinforce original jacket of the tail block every afternoon for 2 weeks. We finished it today at last  Jacket is stronger and it will look nicer at the future exhibit.  One of the big jobs is done.

After finished making jacket, we started filling all the exposed bottom spots of the jacket with saved sediment. Pic might look OK, but not done yet. It's just takes time to make it look like natural

Shino shows us the delicate job of demolding especially when the fossil is fragile, thin or has tricky texture. The tailclub is full of very delicate porous texture.

Is it common to have the tail tendons preserved on ankylosaurs? The only other tail I’ve seen also had it’s tendons preserved like this.

Let's first put this in perspective this is an extraordinary rare well-preserved dinosaur with soft tissue so its very special in every way.    Tail clubs by themselves are extremely rare and most just have the vertebrae so yes its very unusual to see the tendons but they do exist.   The one at the AMNH for example does have them but not has nice.
