Hypslodont mammal tooth

First off,

:yay-smiley-1:HAPPY NEW YEAR!:yay-smiley-1:

Went on a hunt at brownies beach (Miocene, Calvert FM, zone 4?) and it is official, the bay has iced on its shores, that’s the end of winter hunting season I guess. No idea how many epic teeth I must’ve missed because of it. Super cold :ank:

Because of this finds were limited, top three finds include symphyseal hemi (tiny) and half a shark vert. The third? This Mammal tooth, I’m guessing small rodent? Sorry for bad pictures, I’ll try for better ones tomorrow. Can’t find my ruler, but this things tiny, around 1 cm.

Here it is, next to this tooth and the broken shark vert (actually my dads find) I say symphyseal but to be completely honest I’m not too familiar with shark tooth placement yet, should probably say anterior?

Happy New Year all! :)

Here's my muskrat (I think) for comparison.

Nice, is this modern or is it a fossil (and if a fossil what age?)

You can see from my next images that it was bought as tapir incisor!

I’m thinking of labeling this cricetid indet.

for the time being, just to leave my options open (not sure muskrats sensu stricto or their tribe had evolved quite yet)

Well there’s a mistake I’d I have ever seen one! Guess the date and location is hard to rely on as well...

Thanks for posting!

I think the location and age may be accurate.

There were several little boxes with items from this age and location, including some correctly labelled tapir incisors and molars.

I think this one just got put in the wrong box so i snapped it up.

The colour, preservation and other associated specimens suggest to me the provenance is correct.

For any one who’s interested, here’s the spoils. Ray teeth, shark teeth, chunkosauruses, Gastropod steinkern, partial fish vert, partial shark vert, etc.

The ecphora piece come from a fallen boulder, was already smashed up but couldn’t resist trying to remove it, crumbled immediately.

Cold. Even here in NC the creeks and rivers are icing. Not good. As far as the hemi tooth, definitely not a symphyseal. Looks like an upper lateral to me.But do not quote me on that. This is a hemi symphyseal :

Just did:P

move found several hemis of the same placement, varied sizes. It was 25 degrees Fahrenheit, warmer than my hometown in Mount Airy MD (which was 16) but still not a pleasure to walk through the water with waders (I’m crazy I know). Can’t wait till the thaw, in the meantime I’m going to have toe set my eyes to the west for hunting.

Nice haul, shame about the ecphora.

Far too cold for me, I would just die.

You be careful out there!

Thanks! Ecphora are usually in this condition, which makes finding a whole one that much sweeter (I’ve never found a whole one). It is crazy cold here in the winter, but I’m used to it. I almost always go hunting with another person (usually my dad) and I keep my phone fully charged and with me in order to keep safe.

That's surely dedication! :) Glad to hear you also take all necessary safety precautions around freezing bodies of water.

Some very nice finds, made ever more so by the context of the weather conditions. I hear you on the cold... it's about  minus 11 Fahrenheit up here. Brrrr!

Hopefully you had something nice, tasty, and warm to drink to thaw out them fossil-seeking bones afterward!

More like Curiosity combined with a pinch of insanity, easily mistaken for dedication.:P

I guess it’s balmy here compared to Canada most of the winter. I’m fine with the cold, but I would rather it at least come with snow (little so far).

And I did leave the kettle on, always some nice hot tea back at home!
