Dr Mud, 6ix & TinBum - more crabs than you could poke a stick at.

The good Dr is back in NZ and we caught up again.  Time to hit the old hunting spot again - and we werent let down!

Of course TinBum found the first couple of crabs, but Doctor Mud and I very quickly caught up.

In the end, I stopped photographing them all as the battery was going flat... but wow what a blast.

Have a look at this vid after browsing the photos....

Thanks for posting @6ix

I sure had a blast with you guys today.

So nice to catch up and hunt again.

We were blessed with an abundance of crab concs and could afford to be a bit fussy about what we hauled out. The steep hike out always helps you consider how much you want it!

I just took my pack out the car. I ended up hauling out the crab I split in the video. I wasn't convinced it was good enough to haul out.......but it got the thumbs up as you saw after I split it to check.

Second Biggest claw I've seen on a complete crab and I have both halves.

You can only see the small claw clearly in the vid B)

My pack weighed 40 kgs (88 pounds).

But it was worth it!

Hope we can hunt again soon!

Dang, it’s like you got all the crabs in the Chesapeake! Nice finds indeed:dinothumb:

Thanks for showing the latest. Pretty neat but I know I'd throw my back out the first day trying to bring the goods home....LOL.

Pretty awesome. Congrats.

One half of the big fella I carried out.

The big claw on the left is biiiiig.

cant work out if this might be a moult though, as it is orientated a bit weird in the conc. Looks like we are looking front on. You can see the front of the carapace in between the claws.

Concretion is about 30 cm across.

Should prep well as you can see the rock comes away nicely from the shell!

ill glue the halves back together.

Thats from the concretion he split in the video - yep he carried both halves out.

I was so excited to help him get it out I forgot to swap my bits & pieces in my bag for ones I wanted to keep!  We did get this "prep training" one tho... it was in a huge but soft rock and the good Doctor cracked it into smaller pieces for me to carry back..

Ooooh! That's a big one. Do you have the rest of the left claw in the counterpart?

Sure do :)

I was excited as I've seen worn claws this big, but never had The whole shebang.

It will be a glue and prep job.

Amazing. I would gladly haul out an overloaded heavy pack for these beauties.

Great report and pix.  This reminds me of some of the self limiting collecting we have here in Texas, namely Eopachydiscus ammonites.
