My wife needed a nap after a morning surfing adventure, affording me a time window to jump in our silly little rental car and drive across the island on the wrong side of the road in search of fossils.

Errrr.

The right side of the road! :)

Love this thread, something different, interesting and amusing in many ways!

It has been a fun trip.  Lots of variety along the way.  Here’s another old church and cemetery maintained by goats!  Plus a shot of a photogenic green monkey.

The dining has been unique and excellent.  Things are entertainingly different here...like the time we ended up babysitting for the waitress till our food came out.  “Would you like to hold she?”

Sadly, our adventure must now come to an end.  As with all our fossil adventures, My wife and I try to imbibe a little local color and target good food along the way.  On that note, I think we’ll sign off now for one last culinary adventure.

Then things took a creepy twist.  I happened upon several disturbed graves that had human bones strewn about the surface.  I won’t show photos online, but I saw a full tibia, distal half of a femur, ribs, several radii, half a pelvis, and several vertebrae, including some that were fused and arthritic looking.

When I was in grade school I lived in Belgium for a few years. Several cemeteries that I visited had human bones scattered about. The reason was, the cemeteries were very old and had filled up decades to centuries earlier but they were still burying people. When a new body was buried they would dig up the grave along with old bones and bury the new body. These were mostly small church cemeteries .

That still seems disrespectful to old fashioned me.  It seems they could pack a disarticulated skeleton compactly in a small box and rebury it.

Interesting note on the mushroom rock in the background at Bathsheba Beach.  I read that the undercut was caused not by erosion, but by the constant chomping of echinoids going after attached algae with their Aristotle's lanterns.  This struck me kinda funny!

In France, the habit is that when old tombs have missing names, the dead's bone are put together and buried in the indigent's and unknown's communal tomb of the cemetery.
