Thanks for all the answers.  I agree it looks like plant life, now.  Time to get my magnifier out and do some deep study....as in what kind of plant life.  I did find a species of  dragon fly in the area couple of years ago.......  it was confirmed by the University of Alabama...... there aren't any sections to this "stem" so probably not insect life.
