Ludwigia
I was hoping today to continue on with my foraging expedition from last week, but when I got to my little mountain in the Wutach, there was still too much snow lying on the slopes to guarantee me not slipping and sliding over precipices, so I decided to just go to my exposure and do a bit more digging. This time I remembered to take along the camera, so I can show you a bit of the landscape and give you an impression of the digging activity. The first three pics are on the approach to the exposure. Can you guess where it is? A little hilly, eh? 2 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/

Ludwigia
Now for some views of the dig. As you may already have noticed, you can see that I've been digging here over and again for quite a while. I had no inclination to remove all of the overburden today, so I just started scraping out what had fallen down since the last visit and then commenced to tunnel back and to the left. The most fossiliferous horizon is right at the bottom, so I first had to chip away at least some of the overburden in order to get at it. Then I split it methodically and pried out one block after the other for a couple of hours. These in turn have to be reduced in size in the search for ammonites and other fossils in them. Occasionally a large one suddenly appears between the blocks, which I always hope for of course, but I didn't have that kind of luck today. 2 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Kane
Hilly as it is, looks like an ideal spot in nature’s solitude. With snow on the ground, I hope the ground is not frozen... especially since your layer is right at the bottom! ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
Ludwigia
And here are a few impressions of some of the ammonites which I found. The first two were good. The second two were unfortunately just partials, which also happens a lot. There are an awful lot of bits and bites lying around the site by now. As you can see, it turned with time into quite a mudhole, since the snow above was melting and dripping continually down the slope. Good thing I always bring a change of clothes with me and that I have an understanding laundry lady at home. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Ludwigia
Here's first a shot of some of the finds which I took in the middle of the activity and finally one of everything I found after I'd cleaned them up a bit once I got home. I'll show you the results once I get down to prepping them. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/

The only thing you hear other than the birds when the sun is shining is the farmers' tractors in the fields in the valley below and the occasional chain saw. It's fortunately not cold enough for the ground to freeze. If that had been the case, I wouldn't have even made the trip today. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance.
