Carboniferous Nut?

Omnomosaurus

Recommended Posts

After hunting through some loose sediment a few days ago, I dug up something that looks very much like an acorn/nut at first glance.

I come across lots of compressed plant material and the occasional 3D fossil, but this is a pretty unique one.

The area is very close to a soft rock site of  Duckmantian deposits from Carboniferous limestone in north Wales, UK.

I can't find much to identify exactly what it might be....so over to you guys!

+1 for modern peach pit.

Keep looking, though.

I just have some really nice plates with fossil and recent peach endocarps for comparison, so I'll post them here. :)

I've done that mistake so often too... I agree that we feel really stupid afterwards (I know I really do)!

But these peaches really do look fossily, especially when they are a little seaworn.

Show and tell! Always interested in what other Brits find :)

Sure thing! :) There are a lot of specimens I've picked up from the area over the last few years, but here's a sample of what sorts of things have come out of the ground (sadly no invertebrates/vertebrates to be found).

There are a few fern leaves, stigmaria and one mid-sized calamites....along with a couple of pieces I'm not sure about (and they're definitely not peach stones!) :P

I do feel really stupid after that. Glad I'm not the only one who's done it! :D They do look quite fossil-like, and at least we know for next time what to avoid....unless fruit pips become an interesting new field of study!
