My hunting partner cancelled on me so I decided to try out some new spots alone in Northeast Texas. My luck was bad! I started off my day with a leaking boot in 35 deg weather. At my next stop I had three dogs across the creek growling and barking at me. I figured they would go away. I was wrong! They came barreling down into the creek aggressively towards me. The largest of the three was determined to bite me while the others growled. I went to war with my 5 ft hickory walking stick. After a couple of solid hits I won the battle and they retreated. They climbed back to the top of the creek bank and growled and barked at me for another 30 minutes or so. I found a few items and walked a mile back to my truck only to realize I had lost my phone. I started to give up and just report my phone lost but decided to look for it. I hiked the mile back through the woods down into the creek and somehow managed to find it. I did manage to find a nice size shark vert, fish vert and a couple of artifacts. My Brazos hickory walking stick has saved me more times than I can count from hogs, dogs and waist deep mud. It's a little heavy but worth it.

If it escalated any more it would have been nice to have a Geo Pick to deal with it. :muahaha:

Peace river rat

Had dog issues before myself, once in the Peace river with noise from running water, I look up and 15 ft away is a huge rott lab mix. He was just looking at me, he slowly approaches, I put my scraper rake (big custom made deal) between me and the dog *Me* I don't know you, back up man!

He was a 100 plus pounds and he was insistant on smelling me so I finally just let him, turns out he was friendly but some tense moments passed before I ascertained that.

You win some, you lose some, I guess. At least you won the standoff with the dogs and found a nice vert. I was on a similar exploratory trip the other day and came up with nothing but throwaways. At least the pair of foxes just ran away instead of attacking me.

Well, at least there were no sharks and no electric eels.  :)

Max-fossils

Having a dog myself, I really like them.

But I'd probably still get very scared by 3 big growling dogs, and I definitely wouldn't have had the guts to beat them with a walking stick!

What a story you have there :D

Still a pretty good haul though, well done.

yeah; when we walk creeks we are actually in someone's back yard a lot of the time. Dogs just doing their job but the first law of nature applies (self preservation)

Thanks everyone. I'm an animal lover so I hate hitting a dog but when they're attacking I have no issue lol.

Nice report Jarrod. There are several places I hunt where dogs from neighboring homes have been a nuisance, but never a problem. Ther are a few river spots I go to where I worry about gators also.
