First father/son Miocene finds

I am new around here but thought I’d share a few of our humble finds. Nothing museum worthy here but very interesting for us nevertheless. These are from the Sunland area. They come from part of the Topanga Canyon Formation. We were fortunate to have someone show us the site and give us some information. My son is 8 and I am hoping this will be the first of many trips. I can’t identify them so you’ll have to make your own determination there. I like the one with the scallop embedded in the clam.

It's going to be a bit tough to identify Miocene mollusk steinkerns. You might start by searching for scientific literature that lists Topanga Canyon Formation. Many formations have only steinkerns of aragonitic mollusks but the calcitic shelled ones like scallops, jingle shells and oysters are preserved. These will be easier to identify. A very nice way to get your son interested in nature.

Could you give some hints where in the Sunland area these nice fossils were found?

This thread is a couple of years old so you may or may not get a response.  I will caution you that there are essentially no Topanga Canyon Formation sites left that are accessible, they are all on federal or state park property or in a few cases on posted private property.  It's sad but increasingly the way of things.
