Feb.6, 2018 Peace River unknown

I had a rather unspectacular trip on the Peace yesterday and I'll blame it on high water from the weekend's rain. Any excuse will do at this point. I did find this rather peculuar tooth that looks like a pre-molar but does not look similar to the cow or bison pre-molars that I have. I originally thought it might be a recent tooth, but now that it's drying, I'm not so sure. I'd appreciate help with an ID.

Juvenile rhino?

I would love for that to be the case. That was my initial impression when I saw the "pie" shape on the chewing surface, but I couldn't find an image to verify it

I was thinking that as well John.... we'll see what Harry has to say:)

Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!

Nice find, John... Anything that requires an ID is exciting.  Might be Bison premolar m3...

If Rhino, at this size would have to be Menocerus... that would be amazing!!!!:fingerscrossed:

@Harry Pristis

Harry, on the right is a p1 you've identified for me in a previous post and on the left is the subject tooth. I don't se a lot of similarity, although I seem to be rather blind with teeth and faces.

The images suggest to me a bison p1 with advanced wear.  Just a guess.

It can be not only rhino- to me it looks very similar to Bison. :)

The most similar look the first premolars from the frontal part of jaw, however many ungulates (rhinos and also artiodactyls) have similar shape of this tooth.

If it is Miocene Bison, it should be interesting and old species. :D

I've forwarded all 4 pictures to R. Hulbert at UF to see what he has to say. I'll edit this comment with his ID if he has one.

And the results are in:

"I think is it a pathologic (i.e., malformed) first upper premolar from a bison.  If that is not right I am otherwise stumped."

Interesting find John!

Thanks Chris. Harry was (as should be expected) on the right path, but this was a weird one.
