Monica
Hello there! I received a very nice birthday gift from my rock-loving colleague - a big gastropod shell from Manzanilla de Cuba! I'm not sure if it's a fossil or recent shell, but it's pretty heavy (306.72 grams, to be exact), and I was hoping to get some answers as to its identify from you, my forum friends. Please see pictures below: Thanks for your help! Monica I think @MikeR is a shell specialist... And I know that @Max-fossils is a fan of shells, too... RE: the shell's identity - thanks for that, too! Do you think it's more on the modern/recent side, or a fossil? I know that it's not easy to tell, but I'm looking for opinions... I have some fossil ones, and although some color is sometimes retained on the glossy part inside the aperture where the mantle came into contact with the shell, they don't have color on the rest of the shell (i.e. all white). I think yours is relatively recent and sun-bleached. (Let's see what others think). Neat keepsake, though!
Tidgy's Dad
Happy, happy birthday, Monica! ! ! ! Please save me some cake. Love Adam, wifey and Tidgy. P.S. + 1 for probably recent and sun bleached. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.

As for the cake - the kids and I made cupcakes last weekend (from a cake mix, which probably reduced the amount of mess made, but it was still awfully messy!) and there are four left in the fridge - feel free to drop by for one (and Tidgy can have some nice lettuce - I've got a lot of that in the fridge, too ). 29 minutes ago, WhodamanHD said: Happy birthday Monica! Well, I bake pretty much every weekend, so whenever you make it over, there will likely be a treat available (just not cupcakes )
Max-fossils
Happy birthday Monica!!! (One day late though... sorry!) I agree with @Peat Burns that this very nice shell is a queen conch. Lobatus gigas is the name we accept nowadays, Strombus gigas was the older name. There does seem to be a Manzanilla Formation yielding Neogene fossils, so this could be a fossil! But it's always very hard to tell with seashells, especially the white ones, whether they are fossil or just bleached. So it's probably safer to say that this one is modern.
