Hi All

I'm a complete novice at this, Can anyone help please, sorry if I have posted this in wrong section. I have been reading up most of the morning on how to remove the debris with white vinegar. Is this the best way to tackle this item. I'm really interested in all advice.

Vinegar will only accomplish so much. Trying to expose fossils in matrix requires using some sort of tools for scraping away small amounts of matrix at a time a pin vise, dental picks, even a sewing needle can be used . If you have the money you can buy air tools.

The ammonites in there are preserved in calcite so vinegar would attack both the matrix and the fossils. I don’t think there’s much you can do with this specimen, playing around with an engraver or air pen wouldn’t accomplish much.

I concur with what the others have said above.

However, should you find something that may require the use of air tools, such as scribes and abraders, perform a search in our Fossil Preparation subforum. There is an abundance of knowledge to be had there! :)
