Probably, the original material of the fossil was almost totally dissolved. The white external structure might be crystalline silica (amorphous or chalcedonic).

Is this the same locale/outcrop/formation as the plant material shown in the other post?

The fossil sponges in flint nodules from Texas were compared many years ago (J. A. Merrill, 1895) with the sponges in flint from UK. Here are some specimens from the flint pebbles (history collection), for comparative reason.
