Old time Devonian coral specimen from Devonshire, UK. Frechastraea

Specimens of corals from the Devonian limestones of Devonshire in England are hard to come by nowadays - this is one I've just bought and repolished.

It's likely to be a 19th century sample from when the quarries and marble trade were flourishing - many such pieces were sold then as scientific specimens, and many more were used decoratively.

Frechastraea sp. , Givetian/lower Frasnian, Torquay area.

The brass scale bar is 1cm long.

They’re really beautiful in their own right as well as for study. What are you cutting your slices with? Must be a big saw.

I didn't cut this one, just polished out the scratches (it may be a 19th century cut tablet) although I do have a 14" rock saw that I've used with my other stuff.

Neat looking piece!

Kinda looks like 1960's wallpaper.

Thanks, I want some of that!

Now that is stunning, colours are beautiful. Thanks for showing us.

Thanks, Bobby! I'd like to get my hands on some to cut but they're much harder to collect than Carboniferous ones in the UK - I believe most of the extant sites are SSSIs.

Strangely, I have found some Devonian bits on the Yorkshire coast that must have been imported for some reason, not as good as this though.
