North Carolina Oligocene last Friday

Last Friday I went with a group of people to a local North Carolina Oligocene Quarry. This quarry contains exposures of the  late Oligocene Belgrade Formation; Pollocksville and Haywood Creek members along with the early Oligocene river Bend Formation. These are all in situ pictures.

The drive in .... 20180309_085252_001.thumb.jpg.0cd70b54714a0878694cf8d782a5ce84.jpg  20180309_085308.thumb.jpg.bbc6dbd6246d24a783d9c9d47e39a08b.jpg

These piles are mostly Pollocksville member, but there is some Haywood Creek member of the Belgrade mixed in. There is also a pebble lag that has Pleistocene and Pliocene fossils.

First find of the day was this nice little croc tooth, Thecachampsa sp.  20180309_090736.thumb.jpg.1dc01da48a4135b746ac34b71515edf9.jpg

A little later I found this nice cowshark tooth, Notorhynchus cf. primigenius

and this nice little croc vert ..... 20180309_095511.thumb.jpg.bca39342b251233feb14aed2922851b7.jpg

Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt
behind the trailer, my desert
Them red clay piles are heaven on earth
I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt

"Them" hinting at multiple items. Humm, scrutinizing up close and all I see is sand covered lumps. Can you give us a hint like are they inside or outside of the shadow?

Are they bigger than a bread box?

Kindly have something in your picture to show scale.

We have members from all over the world and many of them might not know the size of your shadow.

Awesome finds! Now it seems you have a competition on your hands, I can’t go farther then echinoderm.

Nice finds and trip! All great finds. I have never hunted any Oligocene formations but I hope to someday. I will love to see the echinoids cleaned up.

Yes they are echinoderms, Hemipatagus carolinensis. I will post pics tomorrow of them cleaned up a little.

Can’t wait!

Nice trip pics. That clam is a beauty with all the colors.

I was going for echinoids too. Then in the bottom right of the pic it almost looked a little like 2 more Psammechinus carolinensis. The one thing I occasionally dislike about my in situ pics is that I’ll see a fossil that got away without me noticing it while I was taking a pic of the other one. It usually happens with the really small fossils.
