Dwarf Mammoth

Weigh in on what the heck am I holding? Did I find a tinny tiny Mammoth skull that is cut perfectly in half? Like the smallest ever? I know everybody went nuts over the new one they just found in Santa Rosa Island. But I found mine on the mainland

I’m afraid this looks kinda like a geological specimen rather than a biological one

Not a skull of any kind.

Need more pictures from other angles and a scale to make a guess as to what it is.

Also some better location other than "found on mainland".

That’s what I thought but there is a tooth system and mouth. Too perfect. And the trunk would be above the pre molars

I don’t see any evidence of bone structure, nor the type of teeth that a elephantoid would have. Beware of confirmation bias, it’s struck us all at some point.

Did you find this on the California Central Coast here? We have mostly marine deposits along the coast. Doesn't really look like a skull to my eyes.

It seems you're rather sure, may I ask why you seek our advice when you choose not to heed it?

Not a skull.

No bone texture, no proper skull morphology.

Sorry, but you have an interesting rock there.

Hi

if you don’t mind I would like to weigh in here. I think what you are seeing is a rock made up of Chert that looks like a skull when held in your hands. I also think that is normal I see faces in clouds or in the patterns of a Marble floor and  sometimes  people have seen religious icons burnt into toasted bread . I really think this is caused by a primitive instinct for self defence that we still have today.

looking down the list of TFF members that have comment on this thread , I can tell you that there are some really very knowledgeable people regarding fossils. They are not looking for a skull but simply bone structure for example if they was handed  a mixed box of fragmented fossilised bones and rocks all the same sizes and shapes they could pick the bones out of it.

please keep looking out there who knows what you may find next time.

Cheers Bobby

Done. Absolutely no resemblance to an actual fossil skull. Deformed, or otherwise.  :(

  • Fossildude19 locked this topic

This topic is locked, as the OP has already decided that we don't know what we are seeing.

I suggest you bring your rock to a qualified paleontologist to look at in hand.
Best of luck to Abe with his rock's identiy.
