dodo4
Found this walking the beach near South Ponte Vedra. I feel like I am on the roll, considering the baby mammoth tooth I found couple of weeks ago. I think it is a tooth, but dont know the animal it belongs to. Max-fossils
Doesn't look like a tooth to me... Or a fossil at all. I would rather say that it is some kind of iron pyrite mineral. I might be wrong though! Wait till someone more experienced chimes in. Edit: actually these two last pictures change my mind. Could be a fossil after all. I don't think you can find such a precise groove along the thing (in the middle) in a mineral... So possibly a pyrite-replaced fossil. I'm not that helpful, am I? Always changing my mind! ynot
Could be a piece of bone. Is it really that yellow? Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Me neither, but then again I am no Florida local, so it wouldn't have surprised me to hear that there were pyrite fossils in Florida. But it looks so golden to me that I can't possibly think it isn't pyrite! Max Derème "I feel an echo of the lightning each time I find a fossil. Tidgy's Dad
I think it may be black and the gold colour is the lighting used. You can see the measurement cube looks gold as well in some pics. 2 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.

I think it is an artifact of the lighting. Have to wait for a reply from @dodo4 to tell Us what color it is. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." PalaeoArt
Strange looking thing. It's not mammoth (which has distinctive enamel plates), but it could be two cones on the crown of a baby/juvenile mastodon or gompothere. The shape is close. The texture is the thing that's odd. Looks a little like the texture of two croc dermal scutes fused together

You might try changing the theme you are using at the bottom of the page. The "Main theme" usually has less hiccups. Knowing what device and browser you are using might help as well. abyssunder
The specimen looks like melted metal, but the comparative image shows similar patterns. The color is misleading, even if it's converted to grayscale. Nice find, BTW! Thank you Tim! I use Macbook Pro. It looks like I am able to comment, but the "informative button still does not work. Below is the message I get. The problems I experience are relatively recent, may be about 30-45 days. Before that, everything worked just fine.
